# Layers and styles

The following page covers what data products are available at different zoom levels in the OS NGD API – Tiles, plus details about the four styles available: Outdoor, Road, Light and Black and White.

OS NGD API – Tiles provides ready-made styles that define how the data appears on your map. You can choose a style to suit your application without having to design the map yourself, or you can create custom style JSON file in software such as [Maputnik](https://maplibre.org/maputnik). To apply a custom style, you will need to host the JSON file yourself (for example, on GitHub) and then use the resource URL as your 'Style URL' when setting up your API connection.

{% hint style="info" %}

## **Ready to get started?**

Once you have chosen a style and coordinate reference system and are ready to use the API in an application, follow the [OS APIs getting started guidance](https://docs.os.uk/os-apis/accessing-os-apis/os-ngd-api-tiles/getting-started) or refer to the [OS NGD API – Tiles Technical Specification page on styles](https://docs.os.uk/os-apis/accessing-os-apis/os-ngd-api-tiles/technical-specification/styles).
{% endhint %}

## Choose a map style

The style affects the colours, labels and visual emphasis of your map. It does not change the underlying geographic data. All stylings are available in British National Grid and Web Mercator Coordinate Reference Systems (CRS).&#x20;

<table data-card-size="large" data-view="cards"><thead><tr><th></th><th></th><th data-hidden data-card-cover data-type="image">Cover image</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><h4>Outdoor</h4></td><td>A general-purpose map designed to show the natural features of the landscape clearly.</td><td data-object-fit="cover" data-alt="An example of a map styled using the Outdoor map styling to clearly show features of the landscape."><a href="https://4043944746-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FoEzqrBzRGoJw7nQyLj1W%2Fuploads%2FA4hLgflvsQ9YllfRvWwS%2FOutdoor.png?alt=media&amp;token=50e77633-a131-4b34-8038-0105286b55d4">Outdoor.png</a></td></tr><tr><td><h4>Road</h4></td><td>A transport-focused style that makes the road network easy to identify and follow.</td><td data-object-fit="cover" data-alt="An example of a map styled using the Road map styling to clearly features of the road network."><a href="https://4043944746-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FoEzqrBzRGoJw7nQyLj1W%2Fuploads%2F2IRogRT3eXpV81KeUi0f%2FRoad.png?alt=media&amp;token=b0f8553c-e738-4622-b269-77b15073feb1">Road.png</a></td></tr><tr><td><h4>Light</h4></td><td>A clean, understated map with a light colour palette to provide geographic context without competing with information displayed on top of the map.</td><td data-object-fit="cover" data-alt="An example of a map styled using the Light map styling to provide necessary geographic context without adding unnecessary information on top of the map."><a href="https://4043944746-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FoEzqrBzRGoJw7nQyLj1W%2Fuploads%2FlBgiXZCWu8NzBB8qV6n5%2FLight.png?alt=media&amp;token=23d8b851-d346-40b5-8f5a-f0e46add44ae">Light.png</a></td></tr><tr><td><h4>Black and White</h4></td><td>A monochrome map that removes colour while retaining geographic detail and labels. </td><td data-object-fit="cover" data-alt="An example of a map styled using the Black and White map styling to clearly show a monochrome map that removes colour while retaining geographic detail and labels. These styles can be accessed through API requests by referencing the following style names:

<table data-search="false"><thead><tr><th width="200.40533447265625">Style Name</th><th width="229.7115478515625">Style</th><th width="167.67254638671875">Coordinate Reference System (CRS)</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><code>3857</code></td><td>Outdoor</td><td>EPSG:3857</td></tr><tr><td><code>27700</code></td><td>Outdoor</td><td>EPSG:27700</td></tr><tr><td><code>Road-3857</code></td><td>Road</td><td>EPSG:3857</td></tr><tr><td><code>Road-27700</code></td><td>Road</td><td>EPSG:27700</td></tr><tr><td><code>Light-3857</code></td><td>Light</td><td>EPSG:3857</td></tr><tr><td><code>Light-27700</code></td><td>Light</td><td>EPSG:27700</td></tr><tr><td><code>Blackwhite-3857</code></td><td>Black and White</td><td>EPSG:3857</td></tr><tr><td><code>Blackwhite-27700</code></td><td>Black and White</td><td>EPSG:27700</td></tr></tbody></table>

## Tile Cache Zoom Levels

The tables below describe the data that is available at each zoom level for both coordinate reference systems (CRS). Open layers are available to all users of the API regardless of which Data Hub plan is used, at no cost. Premium layers use detailed OS NGD content and require the appropriate product access and licensing. Check your OS Data Hub plan and product access before designing an application around these levels.&#x20;

### Web Mercator - EPSG:3857

<table data-header-hidden data-search="false"><thead><tr><th width="110.225341796875"></th><th width="186.9459228515625"></th><th width="129.946044921875"></th><th width="181.2127685546875"></th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Zoom level</td><td>Approximate scale at 96 DPI</td><td>Data access</td><td>Primary source data</td></tr><tr><td>6</td><td>1:4 622 324</td><td>Open</td><td>OS Open Zoomstack</td></tr><tr><td>7</td><td>1:2 311 162</td><td>Open</td><td>OS Open Zoomstack</td></tr><tr><td>8</td><td>1:1 155 581</td><td>Open</td><td>OS Open Zoomstack</td></tr><tr><td>9</td><td>1:577 791</td><td>Open</td><td>OS Open Zoomstack</td></tr><tr><td>10</td><td>1:288 895</td><td>Open</td><td>OS Open Zoomstack</td></tr><tr><td>11</td><td>1:144 448</td><td>Open</td><td>OS Open Zoomstack</td></tr><tr><td>12</td><td>1:72 224</td><td>Open</td><td>OS Open Zoomstack</td></tr><tr><td>13</td><td>1:36 112</td><td>Open</td><td>OS Open Zoomstack</td></tr><tr><td>14</td><td>1:18 056</td><td>Open</td><td>OS Open Zoomstack</td></tr><tr><td>15</td><td>1:9 028</td><td>Open</td><td>OS Open Zoomstack</td></tr><tr><td>16</td><td>1:4 514</td><td>Premium</td><td>OS Open Zoomstack and OS NGD</td></tr><tr><td>17</td><td>1:2 257</td><td>Premium</td><td>OS NGD</td></tr><tr><td>18</td><td>1:1 128</td><td>Premium</td><td>OS NGD</td></tr><tr><td>19</td><td>1:564</td><td>Premium</td><td>OS NGD</td></tr></tbody></table>

{% hint style="info" %}

### EPSG:3857 zoom level 16

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.os.uk/os-apis/accessing-os-apis/os-ngd-api-tiles/layers-and-styles.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
