Add Travel Modes

Continuing to follow the Esri tutorial, travel modes were set-up for driving a motor vehicle (time and distance-based), walking, and driving a bus (time and distance-based). You may need to set up travel modes for cycling, rail, ferry, driving HGVs and other vehicles depending on your use case. These will require you to set up Restrictions and Costs associated with each mode of travel.

Driving a Motor Vehicle (car) - Time-based

1

Select costs

Select the 'Driving_Minutes' cost as the Impedance and the 'Kilometers' cost as the Distance Cost.

2

Select restrictions

Select 'Driving a Motor Vehicle' and 'Oneway'. This will mean cars will not be routed along network links that contain these restrictions.

3

Select U-Turns

Select 'Dead Ends and Intersections'. This means that cars will only be able to perform U-turns at dead-ends and junctions, that is, not midway along a network link, etc.

Driving a Motor Vehicle (car) - Distance-based

1

Select costs

Select the 'Kilometers' cost as the Impedance and the 'Driving_Minutes' cost as the Time Cost.

2

Select restrictions

Select the 'Driving a Motor Vehicle' and 'Oneway'.

3

Select U-Turns

Select the 'Driving a Motor Vehicle' and 'Oneway'.

Driving a Bus - Time-based

1

Select costs

Select the 'Driving_Minutes' cost as the Impedance and the 'Kilometers' cost as the Distance Cost.

2

Select restrictions

Select the 'Driving a Bus' and 'Oneway' restrictions. Also select the ‘Height Restriction’ restriction. This is where the Vehicle Height (metres) parameter value can be set, which for the purposes of testing the OS MRN data was set at 3.35m, being an assumed value for the average height of a single-decker bus.

3

Select U-Turns

Select 'None' for the U-Turns. This will prevent buses from making U-Turns anywhere in the network.

Driving a Bus - Distance-based

1

Select costs

Select the 'Kilometers' cost as the Impedance and the 'Driving_Minutes' cost as the Time Cost.

2

Select restrictions

Select the 'Driving a Bus' and 'Oneway' restrictions, and also select and set a 'Height Restriction' of 3.35m.

3

Select U-Turns

Select 'None' for the U-Turns.

Walking - Distance-based

1

Select costs

Select the 'Kilometers' cost as the Impedance and the 'Walking_Minutes' cost as the Time Cost.

2

Select restrictions

Select the 'Walking' restriction.

3

Select U-Turns

Select 'All' for the U-Turns. Pedestrians can turn around anywhere in the network.

Alternative modes of transport

You may need to set up travel modes and costs and restrictions for other modes of transport such as cycling, ferry, and rail.
