Build the Network

Once all the Costs, Travel Modes, Descriptors, and Restrictions have been set, it is time to Build the Network.

First, make sure the Network Dataset is not on the map. Then either:

• Build the network using Section 3 of the accompanying OSMRN_Esri ArcPro notebook available on the OS MRN Downloads page, or

• Access the Build Network tool via Analysis > Tools > Geoprocessing > Build Network, or

• Right-click on the Network Dataset in the Catalog and select Build.

Depending on the complexity of the network (number of edges, restrictions, travel modes, etc.) the Build process may take a while.

If any errors occur during the Build process, the details of the errors can be viewed using the ‘View Details’ option at the bottom of the Build Network geoprocessing screen. The location of a text file saved in a Temp folder will be shown, which identifies the component parts of the network that are causing the errors, along with the reason for the error.

Build warnings

Certain warnings, which occur when building the network, are to be expected and have been outlined in a known issues section at the beginning of the OSMRN_Esri notebook.

Any subsequent additions or changes made to the Network Dataset properties, for example, adding new travel modes or additional costs, will require the network to be rebuilt using the Build Network tool.
