# End of Life Notice – Code-Point with Polygons

## Overview

The Code-Point with Polygons product will become End of Life on **31 March 2028**. As of this date, Ordnance Survey will cease to maintain or publish updates, and access to the product will be removed from the OS Data Hub.

* **Full withdrawal date:** 31 March 2028

## Why is this happening?

As part of our [strategic product roadmap](https://ordnance-survey.aha.io/shared/07d88421740e7f0bcc68fcd619b791eb), OS is committed to the evolution of geospatial data and services in order to meet customers’ needs. Through the [Public Sector Geospatial Agreement](https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/customers/public-sector/public-sector-geospatial-agreement) (PSGA), OS continuously delivers enhancements to the [OS National Geographic Database (OS NGD)](https://docs.os.uk/osngd) to provide new, richer data across all market sectors. We’ve improved usability by providing customers with access to the latest OS NGD data enhancements via new systems (the OS Data Hub and APIs) rather than via older and less efficient mechanisms. As a result, some of our existing products will become out of date and reach the end of their life.

* **Stronger alternative:** The OS NGD offers enriched attribution with greater coverage that will provide more in-depth insights into postcodes use cases.
* **OS product consolidation:** The withdrawal of Code-Point with Polygons is part of a broader initiative to streamline and consolidate our product offering, ensuring our products are sustainable and better aligned with current and future customer needs. We're actively working to migrate existing customers to the OS NGD.

We understand this change will impact customers, and we are committed to providing guidance and support to facilitate a smooth migration to OS NGD.

## What's the product migration path?

We recommend you migrate to using OS NGD data in the [OS GB Postcodes](https://docs.os.uk/osngd/data-structure/administrative-and-statistical-units/gb-postcodes) and [OS NI Postcodes](https://docs.os.uk/osngd/data-structure/administrative-and-statistical-units/ni-postcodes) Collections; these collections provide more granular data for solving postcodes use cases than [Code-Point with Polygons](/os-downloads/products/areas-and-zones-portfolio/code-point-with-polygons.md).

## What are the benefits to using OS NGD data?

The OS GB Postcodes and OS NI Postcodes Collections deliver a consistent, authoritative view of postcode geography across Great Britain and Northern Ireland. They meet a critical need for reliable postcode data that aligns to real-world features and addresses rather than abstract centres of volume. The Postcode Unit Point and Postcode Unit Area Feature Types enable customers to analyse, aggregate and apply postcode-based geography with confidence at local, regional and national scales.

Ultimately, postcodes data can empower organisations to plan with confidence, improve analytical accuracy and act on trusted spatial context. By replacing legacy postcode representations with building-aligned geometries, delivered through our API (for the Great Britain feature types), postcodes data become an essential foundation for anyone who needs to understand, analyse and ask a question based on the spatial context of a postcode.

### Key benefits

* **Customer-friendly data formats and API delivery option**: OS NGD data is accessed through the [OS Data Hub](https://osdatahub.os.uk/) and is available to download from OS Select+Build in two widely adopted and simple to use formats – GeoPackage and CSV (comma-separated values). Postcodes data for Great Britain is also available via API for the first time in GeoJSON format via [OS NGD API – Features](https://docs.os.uk/os-apis/accessing-os-apis/os-ngd-api-features), enabling automated access and integration.
* **Better geometries**: Postcode geometries in the OS NGD are more representative of real-world features and are more intuitive to customer expectations as they more closely align with how you imagine postcodes to look.
* **PAF data included**: The two OS NGD collections provide points for all postcodes supplied in Royal Mail's Postcode Address File (PAF) for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
* **Better coverage**: Full UK postcode coverage is available if you combine data from the two OS NGD collections as the identical schemas enable compatibility. There's full GB polygon coverage with no gaps, and consistent behaviour across urban and rural contexts<mark style="color:$danger;">.</mark>
* **Increased data update frequency**: The Code-Point with Polygons product is updated quarterly, while the two OS NGD collections are updated monthly.
* **Choose exactly what data you take**: OS Select+Build gives flexibility to choose postcode features that are relevant to your use case as recipes and data packages can be tailor-made.
* **Richer attribution:** The two OS NGD collections provide attribution designed for analytics and decision-making, not just reference lookups; attribution includes:
  * New area, district and sector attribution which makes it easier to analyse data at these scales
  * Delivery points counts per postcode and / or postcode part (for use with PAF data)
  * Metadata about a postcode’s parts

Both collections contain the Postcode Unit Point Feature Type, which is a point representation of a postcode, calculated from the average positions of addresses which share a postcode. The OS GB Postcodes Collection also contains the [Postcode Unit Area Feature Type](https://docs.os.uk/osngd/data-structure/administrative-and-statistical-units/gb-postcodes/postcode-unit-area), which is an area representation of the notional extents of areas containing addresses which share a common postcode unit.
