This page details upcoming data that will be provided for the new Address Primary Classification Description Code List in the OS NGD from the end of September 2025 to give you early insight. This code list is currently not available through the live access services. The information on this page is as accurate as possible, but is subject to change before launch.
The Address Classification Scheme provides varying levels of classification for addressable objects which are captured and maintained by the Local Authorities and Ordnance Survey. This allows searches to be limited on residential or commercial addresses or be more specific to find all the flats or all fast-food outlets. The varying levels of classification are as follows:
Primary Level Classification R: Residential C: Commercial
Secondary Level Classification RD: Residential Dwelling CH: Hotel/Motel/ Boarding/ Guest House
Tertiary Level Classification RD02: Detached House CH01: Boarding/Guest House/ Bed And Breakfast/Youth Hostel
Quaternary Level CH01YH: Youth Hostel
This code list is used in association with the Primary Classification Description attribute which is present within the Built Address, Historic Address, Non-Addressable Object and Pre-Build Address Feature Types in both collections of the OS NGD Address Theme. The code list provides a detailed classification for addresses, for example, Residential and Commercial.
