Advisory Cycle Lane On Road

Advisory lanes are marked with a broken white line that indicates motor vehicles should not enter unless it is unavoidable.

Fully Segregated Cycle Track

A cycle track that provides continuous physical segregation from the road carriageway or footway (for example, a full height kerb, a verge or a barrier). The term 'cycle track' is used here to describe infrastructure for cycling within the highway boundary that is physically separated from motor vehicles, rather than the legal definition.

Lightly Segregated Cycle Lane On Road

Provides intermittent physical protection from motor traffic on the carriageway (for example, use of refuges, planters, bollards, intermittent kerbs, wands or other features).

Mandatory Cycle Lane On Road

Mandatory lanes are marked with a continuous white line that prohibits driving in a cycle lane. Mandatory cycle lanes therefore provide greater legal protection than advisory cycle lanes.

Segregated Shared Use Cycle Track

A surface which is available for use by both pedestrians and cyclists, with an identifiable separate area for cyclists. This separation can be achieved through the use of painted markings, changes in surface or colour, intermittent bollards or low raised delineators.

Stepped Cycle Track Along Road

A cycle track that is raised above the carriageway but sits below the level of the footway. The term 'cycle track' is used here to describe infrastructure for cycling within the highway boundary that is physically separated from motor vehicles, rather than the legal definition.

Unknown Type Of Cycle Track Or Lane

Evidence of cycle facility but classification unknown.

Unsegregated Shared Use Cycle Facility

A surface which is available for use by both pedestrians and cyclists. The two users (cyclists and pedestrians) share the same space freely, with no physical separation. Designated by signage.
