This page details upcoming data that will be provided for the new Retail Hierarchy Value Code List in the OS NGD from the end of March 2026 to give you early insight. This code list is currently not available through the live access services. The information on this page is as accurate as possible, but is subject to change before launch.
This code list is used in association with the Retail Hierarchy attribute which is present within the Retail Area Aggregated Feature Type. The code list describes the retail hierarchy values that can be assigned to Retail Area Aggregated features.
Hierarchical order used for labels in this code list
Please note that the labels in this code list run in hierarchical order, rather than the usual alphabetical order used in OS NGD code lists. The labels are organised by size, from largest to smallest, based on the count of retail addresses in each entry.
National Centre
The largest number of retail addresses within a built up area.
Major Regional Centre
Has a large number of retail addresses and a significant number of smaller satellite retail areas and at least one parent National Centre.
Regional Centre
Has a large number of retail addresses and a medium number of smaller satellite retail areas, less than a Major Regional Centre.
Town Centre
A significant cluster of retail addresses which shares a region with other retail areas.
Small Town Centre
A small amount of retail addresses which share a region with a small number of other retail areas.
Major District Centre
A retail area which has a number of satellite retail areas and a good number of retail addresses.
District Centre
Has a small number of satellite retail areas and a decent number of retail addresses.
Local Centre
A retail area which has a smaller number of retail addresses which is not significant for the built up area.
Non-Urban Retail
A standalone retail site with no other built up area around it.
