# Building routable transport networks

This page lists the core and optional OS NGD feature types you'll need to use to build various routable transport networks (path and road, road only, path only, ferry, and rail).

The core OS National Geographic Database (OS NGD) feature types listed below are the ones you'll need to include in your OS Select+Build recipe/s to build basic routable transport networks (path and road, road only, path only, ferry, and rail). Depending on your use case, you may also want to include some of the optional feature types listed below in your recipe/s.

### What is OS Select+Build?

OS Select+Build is our download service that gives you access to OS National Geographic Database (OS NGD) data. You can use it to choose the OS NGD data you need (by [theme, collection and feature type](/osngd/getting-started/os-ngd-fundamentals/terminology-and-access.md)) and select how you want to download your data as a data package. OS Select+Build is available via the [OS Data Hub](https://osdatahub.os.uk/).

One of the major benefits of the OS NGD is that you can select and build your own data package/s rather than taking pre-selected OS products. There's no need to take a larger product and spend time filtering out the data you want from it. For example, if you're only interested in transport data, then you just select the OS NGD Transport Theme. You can even narrow it down further and build your own bespoke data package/s by taking certain features types from one of the three transport collections or select feature types from each collection.

Please see the [Downloading with OS Select+Build pages](/osngd/getting-started/downloading-with-os-select+build.md) for getting started guides to begin using OS Select+Build to access OS NGD data, build recipes and create data packages.

#### Guide to building a routable road network using three popular routing software packages

The [Building a routable network page on our More than Maps site](https://docs.os.uk/more-than-maps/routing/guide-to-routing-for-the-public-sector/part-3-building-a-routable-network) provides a guide to using the core OS NGD feature types listed above to build a routable road network using three of the most popular routing software packages used across the public sector (Network Analyst ESRI, CadCorp SIS and pgRouting).

 {% endcolumns %}

Please note that as path network has lots of self-contained networks, for true A to B routing its likely that road network will be needed too.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.os.uk/osngd/using-os-ngd-data/os-ngd-transport/transport-networks-in-the-os-ngd/building-routable-transport-networks.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
