🆕OS BaseMap Pro

Here you will find information about the OS BaseMap Pro product.

OS BaseMap Pro will be our newest topographic vector product, providing our most detailed, trusted and accurate representation of Great Britain’s built and natural landscape. It will deliver a clear and consistent basemap for organisations that need to visualise, locate and digitise large-scale features with high-quality cartography. This product will be the replacement for OS MasterMap Topography Layer.

OS BaseMap Pro has been designed to be easy to integrate with OS National Geographic Database (OS NGD) data available via OS Select+Buildarrow-up-right on the OS Data Hub, helping you connect richly attributed data with familiar OS cartographic context to unlock enhanced analytical use cases.

OS BaseMap Pro is currently entering the second prototype phase of development.

Why migrate to OS BaseMap Pro?

Over the last three years, OS has developed and delivered the OS National Geographic Database (OS NGD)arrow-up-right to provide the next generation of OS data with enriched attribution, increased currency and easier access methods. As it matures, the OS NGD continues to evolve and expand, unlocking future opportunities for geospatial data for Great Britain and enabling customers to do more with OS data.

In contrast, OS MasterMap Topography Layer was created over 25 years ago for a different era of data delivery. Its legacy schema, formats and refresh cycle mean that it's no longer suited to meet modern requirements as organisations transition to OS NGD-powered products and services.

When looking for an alternative, our customers have told us they need a basemap that provides:

  • Refreshed cartography for today's digital platforms, including pre-integrated styling and improved stylesheets implementing modern styles while keeping the familiar, highly detailed OS look and feel.

  • Trusted and authoritative topographic detail, enriched with cartographic text and created from OS's most reliable sources, with the confidence expected from the UK's national mapping agency.

  • Straightforward compatibility with OS NGD themes, unlocking advanced analytics, smoother adoption and long-term alignment with OS's new data infrastructure.

  • A stable replacement for OS MasterMap Topography Layer, powered by the OS NGD for long-term compatibility with modern systems.

  • Modern data formats and more frequent refresh cycles, making it easier to access key updates sooner.

OS BaseMap Pro is being developed to combine the trusted OS look and feel with the strength, flexibility and future-readiness of the OS NGD to ensure your organisation is equipped for the next era of geospatial data.

Licensing terms

It is our intention that OS BaseMap Pro replaces OS MasterMap Topography Layer, and as such it will be available under the same licensing terms. This includes being free at the point of use for Public Sector customers while also being available on commercial terms for non-Public Sector customers. While the product remains in development, it will be available under Data Exploration terms in most cases.

You can read more about the Public Sector Geospatial Agreement (PSGA) and discover which products are included on the PSGA Product summary page in the Resources section.
