PI stands for Application Programming Interface. They are mechanisms that enable two software components to communicate with each other using a set of definitions and protocols. A good example is daily travel updates that can receive via your mobile phone. The travel app on your phone talks to a travel system via APIs and shows you these updates on your phone.
