What formats does the Land Use enhancements data come in?

The Land Cover enhancements in OS NGD come in the form of cross reference files for the six feature types that are part of the release. The data comes in two formats, CSV and GeoPackage (GPKG).

  • The GeoPackage format comes ready to load into the GIS package of the users choice with different gpkg files for each layer.

  • The CSV format is more suited for loading into a database. It has all of the same layers in csv format and all the same attribution as the GeoPackage.

Data Enhancements

NGD Land Use Enhancements is designed to work in conjunction with OS NGD Land Use to provide greater detail and insight into the features that contribute to that site.

NGD Land Use Enhancements brings a series of attributes regarding Land Use and applies them to the 6 themes of OS NGD that contain topographic features: Buildings, Land, Structures, Rail, Water and Road Track or Path

These attributes include:

  • Site Classification which allows you to identify all the constituent parts that make up a functional site, such as an Airport.

  • Address Classification brings classification and descriptions from our addressing data.

  • NLUD Classification bringing in an industry recognised classification to make it easier for customers to link with this data.

Site Classification

A set of attributes that link the feature back to the Land Use site features that it is part of:

  • Smallest Site ID: The identifier of the smallest Land Use Site feature that the topographic area feature lies within.

  • Smallest Site Land Use Tier A: description of the main activity that takes place at the location of the smallest Land Use Site feature the feature lies within, if any.

  • Smallest Site Land Use Tier B: A more detailed description of the main activity that takes place at the location of the smallest Land Use Site feature the feature lies within, if any.

  • Largest Site Land Use Tier A: A high-level description of the main activity that takes place at the location of the largest Land Use Site feature the feature lies within, if any.

  • Largest Site Land Use Tier B: A more detailed description of the main activity that takes place at the location of the largest Land Use Site feature the feature lies within, if any.

Address Classification

A set of attributes that link the topographic features to the address it forms part of:

  • Address Code: Alternative land use classification that uses a code defined in the Address/BS7666 schema.

  • Address Primary Description: Description of the highest level of an alternative land use classification as defined in the Address/BS7666 schema.

  • Address Secondary Description: Description of the second level of an alternative land use classification as defined in the Address/BS7666 schema.

National Land Use Database (NLUD) Classification

A set of attributes that bring in the NLUD classification for the topographic features

  • NLUD Code: land use classification that uses a code defined in the National Land Use Database schema

  • NLUD Order Description: description of the highest (least detailed) level of an alternative land use classification as defined in the National Land Use Database schema.

  • NLUD Group Description: description of the second level of an alternative land use classification as defined in the National Land Use Database schema.

Where has the new attribution come from?

Ordnance Survey surveyors and remote sensing teams have been capturing and maintaining information on land cover, land use and a more detailed level of description for over 10 years.

  • This data has then been transformed to match attribution for existing products, such as OS MasterMap Topography Layer

  • However, in the OS NGD data it is being published at the original, more granular level

  • Address classifications and descriptions have been derived from an analysis of the attribution of OS NGD Address information that falls within the extent of the polygon.

  • NLUD is populated in the first instance from the land use of the largest Land Use Site (if any) that the feature lies within, and if that does not apply, then by any land use implicit in the nature of the feature itself.
