This code list is used in association with the Description attribute, which is used by the River Basin District Catchment Feature Type. The code list describes the River Basin District Catchment.
The Water Framework Directive (WFD) provides a framework for assessing and managing the water environment in the European Union (EU). Since leaving the EU, the WFD has been replaced in England and Wales by the 'Water Environment (Water Framework Directive) (England and Wales) Regulations 2017'. In Scotland, the WFD was transposed into Scottish legislation by the 'Water Environment and Water Services (Scotland) Act 2003'.

The least-detailed level of catchment published by authoritative bodies, defined as a river basin or several river basins, together with associated coastal waters. A river basin district is the main unit for management of river basins under the Water Framework Directive.
